Guide to the Dundee Area

Local

EAST DUNDEE, WEST DUNDEE, SLEEPY HOLLOW AREA

HISTORY

The village of East Dundee was incorporated in 1871 . Nestled on the eastern shores of the Fox River, East Dundee was known for producing dairy and cheese and served by The Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. Also home to Haeger brick company that was essential in rebuilding Chicago after the Great Chicago Fire. East Dundee and West Dundee was named by a young Scotchman name Alexander Gardiner after winning a drawing. Naming the town after his hometown in Scotland.

The Village of West Dundee was incorporated in 1886. Located on the western shores of the Fox River. In 1835 Elder John and Nancy Oatman established a tavern and a store that became the center of the community.

Sleepy Hollow began as a farm just west of West Dundee.  In 1953 a young man name Floyd T. Falese bought the farm and briefly farmed it. Soon after he began to subdivide the land with a vision of something different than a grid style subdivision.  To retain the country charm Sleepy Hollow was built with meandering streets without sidewalks.
